Salary Negotiation Scripts That Actually Work
01The one rule before any script
Negotiate after the offer, in writing or on a scheduled call — never in the interview that produced it. Until there's an offer, every number you say anchors against you. After it, the leverage flips: they've chosen you, and re-opening the search is the expensive option for them.
Companies expect negotiation. Recruiters budget for it. The fear that an offer will be 'rescinded for asking' is almost entirely mythology at professional levels.
02Script: when they ask your expectations early
'I'd like to understand the full scope of the role before anchoring on a number. If it helps, based on what I know so far, I'd expect a range in line with the market for this level — and I'm confident we can find a number that works if we're both excited.'
If pressed: give a range whose bottom you'd happily accept, and name it as a range ('I'm seeing this level land between X and Y'). Never a single figure.
03Script: the counter after the offer
'Thank you — I'm genuinely excited about this. Based on the scope we discussed and the market data for this level, I was expecting closer to $X. If you can get to that number, I'm ready to sign this week.'
Three parts: enthusiasm, evidence, and a specific number tied to a commitment. The commitment ('ready to sign') is not decoration — it's the thing that makes the ask easy to approve.
04Script: when they say 'that's our max'
'I understand. If the base is firm, could we look at the full package — a signing bonus, an early review at six months, additional PTO, or remote flexibility? Any of those would help close the gap.'
'Max' on base salary is often real; 'max' on everything else rarely is. Signing bonuses and review timing live in different budgets and different approval chains.
05What to negotiate beyond base
In rough order of how easily companies move: signing bonus, start date, remote days, title, review timing, PTO, equity refreshers, education budget. A title change costs them nothing and compounds for your entire next search.
If you want a live rehearsal before the call, our salary negotiation coaching session is built for exactly this — we script your specific numbers together, and it routinely pays for itself several times over.
