7 LinkedIn Headline Formulas That Get You Found by Recruiters
01Your headline is a search field, not a job title
Here's what most people miss: LinkedIn's recruiter search weights the headline more heavily than almost any other field. When a recruiter searches 'product manager fintech,' LinkedIn scans headlines first. If yours says 'Open to new opportunities,' you're invisible.
You have 220 characters. The goal is simple: contain the exact terms recruiters type, then add one line of human proof that makes them click.
02The formulas
1. Target Role + Specialty: 'Product Manager | B2B SaaS & Fintech | Growth & Monetization.' The cleanest formula — it mirrors the search verbatim.
2. Role + Scope: 'Operations Director | Multi-Site Retail | $40M P&L, 200+ FTE.' Numbers differentiate you from the fifty other operations directors in the results list.
3. Role + Outcome: 'Marketing Lead Helping DTC Brands Scale Past $10M.' Outcome-led headlines work well for consultants and career changers.
4. Pivot Bridge: 'Former Teacher → Corporate Trainer | Instructional Design, Facilitation, L&D.' For career changers, naming both sides of the bridge captures searches from the target field while explaining the last title.
03The rest of the list
5. Executive Signal: 'CFO | PE-Backed SaaS | M&A, FP&A, EBITDA Growth.' Executives should stack the vocabulary of the mandate, not the personality adjectives.
6. Skills Stack: 'Data Analyst | SQL, Python, Tableau | Healthcare & Claims Data.' Tools-first works in technical fields where recruiters search by stack.
7. The Hybrid: 'Senior Recruiter | Tech & GTM Searches | Writer of Resumes That Get Read.' Role, niche, and one human line — the formula we use ourselves.
04What to delete immediately
'Seeking new opportunities,' 'Open to work' in the headline (the badge does this job — don't burn 220 characters on it), 'Guru,' 'Ninja,' 'Passionate about,' and any headline that could belong to a thousand other people.
One test: paste your headline into LinkedIn search. If the results page looks like a wall of identical phrasing, rewrite until it doesn't.
05The headline is only the first field
A strong headline gets you into the search results; the About section and experience entries get you the message. All three need to tell the same story in the same keywords.
If you'd rather have a recruiter write it, our LinkedIn Rewrite is $65 — headline, About, and experience, mapped to the searches that matter for your next role.
Let a recruiter write the pivot.
