How Recruiters Actually Search LinkedIn (and How to Show Up)

By Carolyn Christie·August 18, 2026

01Most candidates are found, not applicants

Around 95% of recruiters use LinkedIn to find and screen candidates — and a large share of good roles are filled through outbound search before a job posting gains traction. If your profile isn't built for search, you're competing only in the most crowded channel: applications.

Understanding how the search side works is the single highest-leverage thing you can do for your job search.

02How a recruiter search actually looks

A recruiter opens a search with filters: current or past title, location, industry, years of experience, and keywords. Then they scan a results page of headlines and photos — spending a few seconds per profile before shortlisting.

Two implications. First, the keywords decide whether you appear at all. Second, your headline and first line of your About decide whether the recruiter clicks. Everything else on your profile only matters after those two gates.

03The fields that move the ranking

Headline: heaviest-weighted field. Mirror the exact target-role vocabulary.

Current title: keep it close to market-standard titles, even if your internal title is quirky. 'Member of Technical Staff' ranks for nothing; 'Software Engineer' ranks for thousands of searches.

Skills: LinkedIn lets you list 50; recruiters filter by them directly. List the tools and disciplines from real job postings in your target field — both the acronym and the full term.

About and experience: these feed keyword matching and, more importantly, conversion. Write them for the human who just clicked.

04Signals recruiters read beyond keywords

Activity matters: profiles that post, comment, or were recently updated tend to surface higher and read as 'currently engaged.' Completeness matters: photo, banner, filled sections. And consistency matters: if your resume says one thing and LinkedIn says another, the recruiter assumes the worse version.

None of this requires becoming a content creator. One thoughtful comment a week in your target industry's conversations is enough to signal a living profile.

05The 60-minute version

If you do nothing else: rewrite your headline with your target role's exact title, align your current title to market language, load your skills section from five real job postings, and rewrite the first two lines of your About as a value proposition.

Or hand the whole thing to us — the LinkedIn profile writing service is a $65 one-time engagement, and it's bundled (and fully aligned with your resume) in the Professional package and above.
