Career Change Resume Makeovers: 3 Before-and-After Rewrites

These are composites drawn from the patterns we see every week — details changed, lessons intact. In each one, watch the same move: the 'before' describes duties in the old industry's language; the 'after' describes outcomes in the new industry's language.

Before: 'Taught 10th-grade English to classes of up to 32 students. Graded papers and prepared lesson plans.'

After: 'Designed and delivered instruction for cohorts of 30+, improving measured outcomes 18% year over year; built a curriculum adopted across four departments.'

Same job. The rewrite translates 'taught' into 'designed and delivered training,' swaps grading for measured outcomes, and gives the reader a number to hold onto.

Before: 'Ran the store, handled schedules, dealt with customer complaints.'

After: 'Managed daily operations for a $4M location — inventory, staffing for 18 associates, and vendor coordination — cutting shrink 22% while holding a top-decile customer satisfaction score.'

The pivot candidate's job is to name scope. Budget, headcount, and a measurable win turn 'ran the store' into an operations résumé line.

Before: 'Responsible for platoon equipment and movement logistics.'

After: 'Planned and executed logistics for 40-person unit relocations across three countries — $1.2M in equipment, zero losses, 100% on-time arrival — while coordinating six outside agencies.'

Civilian recruiters can't map military titles, so the after-version translates rank and jargon into scope: people, budget, deadlines, coordination. A PMP or CAPM certification alongside this bullet closes the loop.

Notice what none of these do: apologize, hedge, or hide the old career. The old career is the evidence — it just has to be quoted in the new language.
